Kildare liegt im Westen der gleichnamigen irischen Grafschaft. Die Stadt wurde im 5. Jahrhundert gegründet und hat 7.538 Einwohner (Stand 2006).
Auf dem Gebiet der Stadt liegt das Irish National Stud, ein Gestüt, welches die Interessen der irischen Vollblutzucht vertritt.
In Kildare zweigt eine Eisenbahnstrecke Richtung Süden nach Kilkenny und Waterford ab, eine andere Richtung Westen nach Cork sowie Richtung Osten in die irische Hauptstadt Dublin. Außerdem endet hier die Autobahn nach Dublin.
Die Hauptsehenswürdigkeit des Ortes ist der Rundturm.
